In the constitution of Kenya 2010, Article 33 protects freedom of
expression which includes; the right to seek,
receive, or share information and ideas, freedom of artistic creativity,
academic freedom of scientific research.
However, it does not extend to propaganda for war, incitement to violence, hate speech or advocacy of hatred.
This has enabled every citizen to engage and express themselves on matters of the nation
and how they affect them individually and the
society at large. Their expressions mirror and pushes the government’s reactions on the matters.
The people are given a voice
by taking part in national
engagements, like voting
, peaceful demonstrations, laying
out opinions on matters of the nation
and even talk politics in “barazas”. They are
given a chance to choose and elect diplomatic leaders who would represent them
rightfully in justice and as the will of the
people. A positive sign is that people
are speaking up even within
their constituency for their right to be represented, they speak up about corruption, unlawful ruling, Calling out injustice on the part of their
leaders.
